Cynthia Benedict, M. D. is a board certified Anatomic, Clinical and Cytopathologist, and has been with DCL pathologists since 2000. She is the Medical Director of DCL Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy Clinic and has been performing ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsies since 2000.

In 2009, Dr. Benedict earned a certificate of Special Expertise in ultrasound-guided FNA from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and has additionally been trained as a CAP instructor for ultrasound-guided FNA. In 2012, Dr. Benedict became the first Cytopathologist in the country to earn Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU), training endorsed by American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM).

Since 2011, Dr. Benedict has served on the national CAP Cytopathology Committee, and has been involved in publications of FNA competencies, cytology policies, and educational cases. She is currently involved in didactic and “hands on” fine needle biopsy training of residents, fellows, pathologists, endocrinologists, and otolaryngologists. As a Fine Needle Biopsy Specialist, Dr. Benedict sees patients of all ages and evaluates nodules of thyroid, parathyroid, salivary gland, lymph node, breast, and soft tissue. Additional areas of special interest include gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytopathology and endocrine, gynecologic and urologic surgical pathology. She has also authored a book titled “Ultrasound Features of Superficial and Palpable Lesions” CAP press.

Dr. Benedict graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Cytopathology, also at Indiana University, Indianapolis. She is married with two grown sons. In her free time she enjoys cooking, reading, knitting and tennis.
