Head & Neck Abnormalities

FNA (also known as fine needle biopsy) in the head and neck is used to gather abnormal cells from a mass or a lump for testing. It is a less invasive procedure and features fewer risks than surgical biopsy. The procedure is simple and requires just a short outpatient visit. In most cases, patients are able to return to their normal routines immediately following FNA.

Why FNA for the Head and Neck?

FNA for masses in the head and neck allow doctors to determine the severity of an issue and whether or not a mass is malignant (cancer). In many cases (approximately 80 percent), the results of a fine needle aspiration in the head and neck area are benign and not cancer.

The most common head and neck sites which are biopsied by FNA include:

  • Thyroid gland
  • Salivary gland (parotid, submandibular)
  • Lymph nodes
  • Soft tissue
  • Congenital/Developmental cysts
    • Branchial cleft cysts – congenital or developmental
    • Thyroglossal duct cysts

FNA can be used to distinguish the exact location and nature of the disease.

These masses in the head and neck area can occur at any age and may grow very large in size. They may be benign, malignant (cancer), or there may be an infection. Each of these requires different treatment.

Diagnosis Determines Procedure

Any time a mass is present, it is critical for surgeons to know its status because this affects whether surgery is indicated and how surgery may be conducted. Knowing whether or not a tumor is malignant (cancer) directs the course of treatment and follow-up. The more information gathered with fine needle biopsy, the easier it is to diagnose a problem and determine the proper course of treatment.

Extremely personal, as opposed to “clinical.” So much better than two previous biopsies at a Hospital.
